Overview
Following the split between Seven West Media and Yahoo, 7NEWS and 7's public affairs channels found themselves without a web presence. The challenge was to create a video-led news platform for all Australians, covering breaking news, Sport, Entertainment, Lifestyle, and Finance. With a team of over 600 journalists across 15+ global newsrooms producing video news at scale, the task was to develop a site capable of effectively showcasing this vast content.
As the lead UX designer for this project, I played a pivotal role in shaping the user experience. I focused on mapping out user journeys and crafting intuitive user flows that provided a seamless experience across all devices. The project required a deep understanding of branding and user engagement, which I consistently integrated across the platform, ensuring our vision aligned with the overall goals of the channel.
Idea
In addition to designing user journeys, I worked closely with the marketing team to define and implement video advertising KPIs that supported our business objectives. I also managed and developed the design system, ensuring a cohesive look and feel across all touchpoints. My designs were adaptable for desktop, tablet, and mobile, providing a responsive and user-friendly experience.
Collaboration was key to our success. Working alongside a dynamic team, including those responsible for strategic direction and content management, I ensured that design specifications were met and that the development process stayed on track. Leveraging the technical infrastructure provided by our partners, we rapidly prototyped and built the site, adopting a traditional print format that allowed readers to quickly skim headlines and select articles of interest.
Impact
Results
Within a few months, the site was averaging over 600,000 visitors daily, with two record days exceeding 950,000 visitors. We ranked fifth in the Nielsen Report for top news websites in the country, and analytics trends indicated a continued upward trajectory, with our market position expected to grow further. This project showcased my ability to lead UX design initiatives, work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, and deliver a high-performing digital product that effectively meets both user needs and business objectives.
